作為國家科學及技術委員會人文及社會科學經典譯注計畫研究成果之一的《美國中小學課堂教學的變與不變，1890-1990年》一書，是少見以課堂教學進行歷史研究的經典之作。本書探討百年之間，美國中小學課堂教學由教師中心逐步朝向學生中心的改革過程中所產生的變與不變，敘述其史實、論證其原委、解釋其意義，並據以推衍所可能帶來的啟示。本書於〈緒論〉，先說明漸進與根本二種改革之別、區辨教師中心與學生中心兩種教學作法的六項指標，以及教學作法變與不變的六項解釋，以為展開後續各章申論之張本。第一章說明世紀之交的傳統教學作法及其所面臨的挑戰；第二至四章分述1920-1940年間，紐約市、丹佛、華盛頓特區等三個都市的中小學課堂教學情形；第五章專論全美各地鄉間及城市等中小學課堂教學狀況；第六章介紹1965至1975年之間全美各地開放課堂與另類學校的教學實施情形；第七章說明1975至1990年之間全美各地開放課堂教學的狀況。第八章解釋課堂教學變與不變的緣由，第九章則以這些解釋為本，分別針對政策制定者、課堂實務工作者，以及研究者提出啟示。費時二年餘的精心翻譯與注釋、多位專家的仔細審查所完成的本書，除了近三十萬字的譯注本身外，更撰有近四萬字包括作者介紹、成書經過、接受情況及文獻評述等項內容的學術導讀。尤其難能可貴的是，高壽九旬的原書作者Larry Cuban（1934-）為本書親撰中文版的序言，更為本書生色不少。總之，《美國中小學課堂教學的變與不變，1890-1990年》是教育、歷史、課程與教學等領域的一本好書！
