本書主要從兩大部分對藝術教育進行了討論。第一部分對不同藝術教育形式對認知的影響進行了分析，包括多元藝術教育、音樂教育、視覺藝術教育、戲劇教育、舞蹈教育對認知的影響和視覺藝術對閱讀的影響，第二部分考察了藝術教育對創造力、主動性、社交技能、腦力開發等非認知方面的影響。該書通過對大量研究的客觀而審慎的分析，提出接受一定形式的藝術指導將對某些具體技能的開發產生影響，特定藝術形式的學習會形成對應類型的技能，而這些技能可能“轉移”到其他領域。例如，音樂學習涉及聽覺訓練，聽覺提高會提升語音感知的技能，因而音樂學習就“轉移”提升了語音感知技能。另外，戲劇學習中涉及人物分析，因此會影響到理解他人觀點的技能。但該書同時指出，藝術教育對於創造性和關鍵思維、行為和社交技能的影響尚無法得出結論。展望未來對藝術教育影響力的研究，該書作者希望實施更多的實證性研究，並且建議優先在在方法論和理論性上進行提升。更加具體的建議則包括考察藝術思維習慣、探究具體藝術和特定非藝術技能間的聯繫、比較研究藝術形式的學習和“轉移”領域的學習等等。
