Despite operating in one of the most tightly controlled media environments in the world, Chinese journalists sometimes take extraordinary risks, braving the perils of job loss or imprisonment to aggressively report sensitive stories. As a result, a loosely connected group of brave journalists stands at the forefront of some of China’s most dramatic social and political changes. The central question this book seeks to address is why these news workers choose to challenge their bosses and at times even the immense power of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The author argues that news workers often brave the perils of challenging an authoritarian system not because of market concerns or a competitive marketplace, but because they are driven by a particular professional orientation the author calls "advocacy professionalism." Ultimately these advocate journalists matter because they are challenging specific policies and changing China, one article at a time.
