關傑才

畢業於廣州嶺南大學社會學系，曾任該大學訓導主任，期間鑽研宗教比較學。一九四八年，移居香港，再轉到澳門定居，擔任電影字幕翻譯員、中學英文科老師及教務主任。

我國文字有：一曰指事、二曰象形、三曰形聲、四曰會意、五曰轉注、六曰假借等，號為六書，或稱六體。六書中：以形聲、會意、轉注三者，及字典部首等結構作用，與英文字頭字尾或構詞成份，比似互相類近也。

余本鄙陋庸薄，文無所底，學無所宗。雖謬為人師凡卅餘載，但亦常患不精，故每兀兀終日，搜源索義，以增所缺。幸有一得，即記之，錄之，彙積成冊，且曾作講義頗受歡迎，但仍未敢付梓。蓋拾人牙慧，貽笑方家而已。后悉坊間書肆尚乏此類詳盡之作，廼不自慙悚，冒沒出版，絕非敢抱立言而建不朽之心，衹望藉以為有志於研習英文者，一指之助耳。

先師曹炎申博士，著作等身，曾以英語對來穗學習粵語之外籍官學生演講。其時值余忝任廣州市基督教青年會中學教務主任，曹師著陪末席，聆其教育高論。事後彼此相談，謂曹博士所用字眼精簡而奧，其英文造詣可謂深矣。然彼亦曾語余曰，能識基本字彙，加以明其結構，便能運用於股掌之間味其言，則編寫此書似無不善也。至於有病以中文編寫者，則余衹可以飽者不食，渴者方飲之理自辯。況今有人力主以母語教授外語，更使事半功倍，則余又何為自鳴學識而唬人耶。

余愧未能貪多務得，且家無餘書足供參考，是故陋誤難免，唯望前輩指正。
