The Mysteries of Udolpho: (Annotated Edition)

A young girl named Emily happily lives with her parents in her father's castle. The family does not like secular society and leads a quiet life in solitude. Soon misfortune arises: Ms St. Aubert dies and this loss greatly affects the health of Mr. St. Aubert. After the doctor's recommendations he and his daughter decide to go on a trip to the south of France to improve the health and change the situation. During their journey, they get acquainted with a young man Valancourt. He accompanies them and between them a warm and tender relationship is established. It becomes obvious that the young man falls in love with Emily and she answers him in return. But the moment comes when their ways diverge and Valancourt leaves them. Emily and father continue their journey. They come to the south of France but Mr. St. Aubert is worse and there is little hope that he will return home. They are helped by local people and one old, but very kind man, La Voisin takes them in his house. After the death of his wife he lives with his daughter and her children.
