His mother's collection of poems forms one of the largest existing youth collections of any English writer. At age 15 he became ill, suffering severe pain in the head and spine for the rest of his life. Later in life he also developed lung problems, possibly tuberculosis. He took laudanum for pain from an early age, which probably contributed to his fragile health.In the 1840s, Elizabeth was introduced to literary society through her cousin, John Kenyon. His first collection of poems for adults was published in 1838 and he wrote prolifically between 1841 and 1844
