The recitals of penance ( patits ) are a good first step towards an intended edition of the Xorde Avesta , says Buyaner, because of their unique character as Zoroastrian prayers that, despite their great importance for everyday religious life, have no Avestan prototype. His starting point, then, is Pahlavi versions of three of the four patits -- Xwad Patit, Patit i pasemanih (Patit Adurbad), and Patit i murdagan (Patit i ruwanig)--and Pahlavi and Pazand versions of the fourth-- Patit i pasemanih II. Introductory chapters precede the texts, and commentary, glossary, and indexes follow. Each passage appears in the original followed by a transliteration into Latin script and an English translation.
