Teaching to Strengths ― Supporting Students Living with Trauma, Violence, and Chronic Stress

Written in plain language to be accessible to a wide audience, this work can serve as a college textbook, training book, and reference for individual and group study with teachers, school administrators, educational service agencies, and district-based professionals. The book describes methods, modeled on a strengths-based perspective, that preK-12 classroom teachers can use to help support students’ strengths, resiliency, academic achievement, and socio-emotional development. Because the methods are designed to work within a collaborative approach, the book contains recommendations on how teachers, support staff, counselors, and administrators can work together with students, families, and the local community. Real-life vignettes throughout the book demonstrate the use of the methods in rural, suburban, and urban schools across the country.
