The Turkish dialects spoken in Trabzon and partly also in neighboring Rize, toward the eastern end of the south coast of the Black Sea, are the Anatolian dialects that have preserved most archaic features, says Norwegian scholar Brendemoen, but also display most innovations due to the influences of foreign language, especially Greek. He analyzes the dialects synchronically and diachronically and explains the features that distinguish them from other Anatolian dialects, then uses the information to discuss the Turkization of the area. Readers are assumed to be adept in Standard Turkish, and so he has not translated quotation from Turkish dictionaries or other references into English.
