For almost three centuries, the “Pennsylvania Dutch”—descended from German immigrants—have practiced white magic, known in their dialect as Braucherei or Powwowing. The art of black magic is known as Hexerei. Healing powers are believed to derive from the Holy Trinity but the powers of Hexerei are from the Devil. Practitioners draw on folklore and tradition dating to the turn of the 19th century, when healers like Mountain Mary—canonized as a saint for her powers—arrived in the New World. The author, a member of the Pennsylvania Dutch community, describes in detail the practices, culture and history of faith healers and witches.
作者簡介
Richard L.T. Orth grew up and spent the majority of his life in Berks County, in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. He brings nearly twenty-five years of experience in museum collections, field research and writing, mostly about the Pennsylvania Dutch culture: their people, history, folk art, folklore, architecture, and folk religious practices from both Plain sects to backwoods Worldly Pennsylvania Dutch. He is the director of the American Folklife Institute and lives near Burlington, Vermont.
