However, urbanisation and urban growth do not only mean the densification and development of city centres. Many new centres are developing on the periphery of metropolises, either through the regeneration of abandoned industrial areas, or as completely newly planned cities. Current case examples such as Smart City Malta, Drammen in Norway, Newark in the USA, and the Hunziker-Areal in Zurich are examined with regard to planning strategies and qualities such as their human scale, sustainable neighbourhoods, and usage mix.
