This literary study examines the power of representation in the African novel across Africa’s historical transformations. The book begins with background on post-colonial transformation and definitions of state, nation, and society. This is followed by a literature review and presentation of a theoretical framework that incorporates ideas from post-colonial theory, narratology, and socio-criticism. Later chapters deal with areas such as historiography, linguistic structures of various African novelists, and hegemonic construction and subjectification in the post-colonial polity. Writers discussed include Ahmadou Kourouma, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Sony Labou Tansi, and Ayi Kwei Armah. The book’s conclusion examines major trends in the representation of state and society.
