Finding the recent publications on the military religious orders voluminous but somewhat uneven, Luttrell offers again 19 detailed his studies based on primary document and archival research that first appeared between 1986 and 1996. Most examine the Hospitallers on Rhodes and elsewhere in the east such as Cyprus and Bodrum. Others however consider the background to the order's move to Rhodes during the period following the Latin loss of Acre in 1291; the western provinces and priories from which the Hospital derived the manpower, resources, and political support essential to its operations in the Levant; spiritual life; and medical activities. They attempt in particular to establish statistically the extent of the commanderies, the number of the brethren, and the amounts of money the western provinces sent to the Eastern Convent.
