David follows his 2006 study of the language of the normative genre of public law in the Ramesside Period of ancient Egypt, with a study of the language of documents pertaining to the private sphere. His goal is to establish the linguistic features of the genre and to compare them with the dialect used in public sphere normative instruments. He begins by setting out the terminology both of the legal documents and of scholarship on them. Then he surveys in turn wills and gifts, partitions, and contract-related records. Many of the texts are from the oGardiner/Ashmolean collection, and others are in oPetrie, pTurin, and elsewhere. For each, he discusses the date, the hieroglyphic text, the nature and state of the instrument, the legal step, the legal issue, textemic features, and the categorization of terms of special reference in the legal register. Indexes cite syntactic forms and technical terms, Egyptian texts, and main Egyptian lexemes discussed. He plans a third and final volume on the contentious genre.
