商品簡介

Reporting War and Conflict brings together history, theory and practice to explore the issues and obstacles involved in the reporting of war and conflict today. The book argues that risk is an integral part of war reporting and uses it as a prism through which to analyse the ways in which individual reporters, news organisations and society make sense of it.

The book begins by providing some history, theory and context to the work of war correspondents. It pays particular attention to the changing nature of technology, organisational structures and the role and identity of the war reporter over time. This is followed by a discussion of specific types of conflicts. Drawing on real-life experiences of reporting from Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, chapters examine how risk and the calculations of risk vary according to the type of conflict. Williams and Harris then move on to debate the arguments around risk in relation to issues such as the impact of war reporting on shaping the response of policy-makers and public understanding of conflict, the issues related to gender and war reporting, the relationship between propaganda, censorship and reporting and the question of the nature of war correspondence in the digital world.

Reporting War and Conflict is a guide to the contemporary changes in warfare and the media environment and the influence these have had on war reporting. It offers students and researchers in journalism and media studies an invaluable introduction to the life of a modern war correspondent.
