The modern mindfulness movement draws its authority from The Foundations of Mindfulness. However, almost nobody reads it today. The common translation is in Victorian English that is virtually indecipherable to nonexperts. As a result, modern mindfulness owes more to the Zen practice of “Just sitting,” and knows little about the Buddha’s more sophisticated approach.
Eric Harrison first translated The Foundations of Mindfulness into workable English in 1975. He made it the basis of his personal practice and his teaching career. After working with it for over forty years, he now presents this new translation and commentary. This may be the first such book not written by a monk or a Buddhist.
