Encyclopedia of Women & Islamic Cultures ─ Methodologies, Paradigms and Sources

This is the first of six volumes in an interdisciplinary, transhistorical, and global project gathering critical essays on women, Muslim and non-Muslim, and Islamic cultures in every region where there have been significant Muslim populations. Forty-six thematic entries discuss methodologies and sources in specific historical periods and regions, and 22 entries represent the approaches of various academic disciplines that have studied women and Islamic cultures. Thematic writings address topics including the rise of Islam (6th to 9th century); legal and jurisprudential literature (9th to 15th century); colonialism (18th to early 20th century); the Malay world (18th to early 20th century); Sub-Saharan Africa (mid-18th to early 20th century); and Iran (early 20th century to the present). Disciplinary entries include treatment of anthropology, demography, folklore, linguistics, sexualities and queer studies, and more.
