商品簡介
Drawing from a large number of college course syllabi, Nevins limits each author to two novels in order to include as many different canonical authors as possible within the space allowed. She aims to provide readers who are wary of long books with an introductory guide to the Victorian canon, explaining what they are about, why she picked them, and why they are worth reading. She notes that, apart from their inherent quality, much of what was written in Victorian literature continues to influence us today as cultural archetypes, the wider culture, or particular works. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) provided the archetypal mad scientist, spinoffs for radio, television, movies, comics, and the genre of science fiction. Each of the 61 entries describes the plot and contains critical commentary on the novel as well as personal reactions and reflections on the work.
