A Functional Account of Marathi's Voice Phenomena ― Passives and Causatives in Marathi

A thoroughly revised version of Pardeshi’s Ph.D dissertation, this monograph focuses on the two most prominent voice phenomena that alter the syntactic valency of the predicate in the Marathi language, namely, the passives and the causatives. Marathi languages are Indo-Aryan and their over 90 million speakers reside in the state of Maharashtra (capital: Mumbai/Bombay). Pardeshi’s monograph makes two important contributions to the field of linguistics in general: the introduction of the traditional scholarship of Marathi grammarians, which remains largely inaccessible to the wider linguistics community due to the language barrier, and the wealth of primary data that is drawn largely from online sources. Prashant Pardeshi (Ph.D., Kobe University, 2000) is Professor at the Department of Cross-linguistic Studies, National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL), Tokyo, Japan. He has published monographs and many articles on typological studies of Asian languages, including tadosei no honshitsu: nihongo to shogengo no taishokenkyu kara miete kuru mono [The essence of transitivity: A glimpse from the contrastive studies between Japanese and the languages of the world], co-edited with Kazuyuki Kiryu, and Heiko Narrog (2015).
