Arguing that climate change adaptation is a local issue, the authors describe the challenges involved in preparing for and managing climate change risks in coastal communities. They describe the New England Climate Adaptation Project, an action research project that tested the effectiveness of science-based role-play simulations as a tool for educating the public about climate change risks and building support for adaptation efforts, in collaboration with four coastal communities in New England: Barnstable, Massachusetts; Cranston, Rhode Island; Dover, New Hampshire; and Wells, Maine. They explain how they assessed the social landscape and readiness of each community, the importance of public engagement to enhance readiness, risk assessments for each community, the use of role-play simulation workshops with the public, and lessons learned from the project, ending with reports on each town.
