The author examines each of the director’s fifty-two remaining films, looking at candles, monuments, statues, buildings, cigarettes, lamps, eyeglasses, staircases and other objects that he argues Hitchcock treated like subjective protagonists with roles nearly equal to the actors who encounter, interact with, and use them.
