Author Toshalis, an assistant professor in Education and Counseling, writes about student resistance in the classrooom. He discusses research as well as practical techniques. His stance is contrary to mainstream thought and most classroom approaches to student resistance. Instead of resistance as the antithesis of academic achievement, he argues that this perspective is extremely limited and gives insight into the possibilities for achievement to be found and released in resistant behavior. Within his argument, Toshalis goes into educational history, philosophy and politics. He discusses at length student resistance as the result of systemic classism and racism. Toshalis offers various ways of meeting and engaging with resistance by, among others: acknowledging and studying institutionalized inequalities; forging personal connections; creating trust; learning to distinguish between the few truly hardcore gangster affiliates and the wannabes and other types; and investing in methods of restoragtive justice.
