Geeslin and Long provide a unified account of research on social factors in second language acquisition with a scope that is sufficiently broad to include diverse approaches but sufficiently focused to serve as a textbook for a standard college-level semester-long graduate or advanced undergraduate course. In addition to the fundamentals, they consider recent empirical research in second-language sociolinguistics. Among the topics are sociolinguistic variation, social approaches to second language acquisition, cognitive approaches to the acquisition of sociolinguistic competence, the role of study abroad on the acquisition of sociolinguistic competence, and norms and targets. Kimberly L. Geeslin is Professor at Indiana University. She is the editor of The Handbook for Spanish Second Language Acquisition (2013) and has published research articles in Studies in Second Language Acquisition and Language Learning.

Avizia Yim Long is a doctoral candidate in Hispanic linguistics at Indiana University. Her research interests include variationist second language acquisition—with particular attention given to Korean-speaking learners of Spanish—and sociolinguistics.
