The Dyophysite Christology of Cyril of Alexandria

Loon (theology, Centre for Patristic Research, Utrecht) was troubled at the interpretation of Cyril's (370-444) christology put forth by both the (Chalcedonian) Eastern Orthodox and the (Miaphysite) Oriental Orthodox representatives as they have met over the past half century to try to repair the rift that opened between them after the Council of Chalcedon in 451. The good patriarch of Alexandria is the last church father that both groups acknowledge in common, and on the interpretation of his teaching hinges their dispute. Hoping to contribute to the reconciliation, Loon explores Cyril's use of Aristotelian logic, meanings and metaphysics in the trinitarian writings, the first years of the Nestorian controversy, Contra Nestorium, and other writings from the year 430.
