Campus life in the United States is suffering from a general criminalization and suppression of dissent and activism, according to Nocella (education, Hamline U.) and Gabbard (bilingual education, Boise State U.), who present 14 chapters describing different elements of the process. Chapters discuss the role of neoliberal policies in the academy and the way it serves to stunt the civic development of students; the policing of minority students on campus; the ways in which pedagogy is policed by administration, law enforcement, or organized propaganda campaigns aimed at intimidating faculty; the use of surveillance cameras and ID card swipes; the use of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act to prosecute scholar-activists who sympathize with the animal liberation movement, and the ways in which different universities have responded to the presence of the Occupy Movement on campuses. Anthony J. Nocella II is Visiting Professor in Education and Senior Fellow in the Dispute Resolution Institute at Hamline University and Editor of the Peace Studies Journal. His latest works includes Academic Repression: Reflections from the Academic Industrial Complex and The End of Prisons: Reflections from the Decarceration Movement.
David Gabbard is Associate Professor in the Department of Bilingual Education at Boise State University. His other works include Knowledge and Power in the Global Economy: The Effects of School Reform in a Neoliberal/Neoconservative Age, Education Under the Security State, and Education as Enforcement: The Militarization and Corporatization of Schools.
