Essays by a dozen historians are concerned with various aspects of the ownership, authorship, and use of books by American architects in the period when their profession emerged. It was during the late 18th and early 19th centuries that architects separated themselves from amateur designers as well as from carpenters and masons, and among the attributes of the new professional class was access to a substantial reference library. In the 18th century, book learning was the mark of the gentleman designer; in the 19th, the library became a badge of its owner's qualifications.
