Mobility Protocols And Handover Optimization - Design, Evaluation And Application

This book shows how an efficient system of optimized mobility management can improve the quality of service in existing forms of mobile communication. It provides a theoretical approach to mobility management, as well as developing the model for systems optimization, including practical case studies using network layer and mobility layer protocols in different deployment scenarios.

This book will provide a common framework for mobility management that considers the theoretical and practical aspects of system optimization.

· Defines and discusses a common set of optimization methodologies and their application to all mobility protocols independent of IPv4 and IPv6.

· Applies these technologies in the context of various layers: MAC layer 802.11 based-mobility, WiMax, CDMA, SIP, HIP, VoIP, and many more.

· Provides a thorough analysis of the required steps during a mobility event such as discovery, network selection, configuration, authentication, security association, encryption, binding update, and media direction.

· Includes models and tables illustrating the analysis of mobility management as well as photographs of sample wires and mobility test beds built by the authors, involving inter-domain and intra-domain mobility scenarios.

Ashutosh Dutta is a senior member of IEEE and ACM. He currently works as a Senior Scientist in Telcordia Technology’s Internet Network Research Laboratory. Dutta has previous experience in designing, implementing, and managing a number of enterprise networks, including wireless and mobile computing related projects. He is also managing the IMS mobility optimization project. Before joining Telcordia, Dutta was the Director of Central Research Facilities at Columbia University. His research interests include Session control protocols, Streaming multi-media, Wireless multicast, and mobile wireless Internet. Ashutosh gained a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, a MS degree in Computer Science, and a Professional Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University.

Henning Schulzrinne gained his undergraduate degree in economics and electrical engineering from the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany. He later received a MSEE degree as a Fulbright scholar from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts. Schulzrinne is chair of the Department of Computer Science at the Columbia University. He is also the editor of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, and the ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, to name but a few. His research interests include Internet multimedia systems, Quality of Service (QoS), and Performance evaluation. Schulzrinne serves as a Chief Scientist for FirstHand Technologies, and is a former Chief Scientific Advisor for Ubiquity Software Corporation.
