Art historian and archaeologist Willemsen serves as curator of the medieval department at the National Museum of Antiquities at Leiden, the Netherlands. Here she looks at school life from the 14th to the 16th centuries from the perspective of those who experienced it on a daily basis. Her study draws from excavations of school sites and archaeological finds of school equipment, and artistic depictions and literary descriptions of schools with all the tangible objects in use there. She surveys Europe briefly, but focuses primarily on the Netherlands. Color photographs and reproductions adorn nearly every page. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Company. Dr. Annemarieke Willemsen (1969) is art historian and archaeologist and works as curator of the medieval department of the National Museum of Antiquities at Leiden. Earlier she published books on Roman and medieval children's toys.
