A two-year study, consisting of interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations, followed five high-performing urban charter schools serving predominantly low-income, minority youth in Massachusetts. Merseth, the principal investigator of the study, uses an analytical framework grounded in the research literature on nonprofit management and effective schools to show that these five schools excel along the organizational dimensions of structure, systems, human-resource strategies, and clarity of mission. After a review of the charter school debate, the first five chapters of the book profile each school in detail. Later chapters examine common elements across the schools, and a conclusion raises questions for charter school advocates and detractors alike. The audience for the book includes parents, educators, policymakers, and scholars. Merseth is founder and director of the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Teacher Education Program; her co-authors are Kristy Cooper, John Roberts, Mara Casey Tieken, Jon Valant, and Chris Wynne. 作者簡介
Dr. Katherine K. Merseth, the principal investigator of this study, has over forty years of experience in instruction, administration, and research in public education in the United States and internationally. She taught math in traditional public middle and high schools for ten years, has provided instruction in math pedagogy, and is the director of the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) Teacher Education Program, which she founded in 1984.
