Realist theory, its epistemological foundations, and the very concept of an international relations "discipline" have all come under attack from postmodern critics in what Jarvis (government and international relations, U. of Sydney, Australia) calls the "third debate." He presents eight chapters that critically assess the validity of these attacks and explore the contributions that postmodernism can make to the study of international relations. Differing in the value that they assign to postmodern criticisms, the contributions discuss such topics as the hermeneutic logic of realist precepts, the inconsistencies and contradictions in the works of Richard Ashley, the ability of postpositive theory to lead to less unicentric approaches to theory, and postmodern theory as itself a contingent phenomena of 21st-century life.
