商品簡介
This impressive work offers a close reading and analysis of the court records for the Court of Session in Scotland from 1532, when it was formed, until about 1534. Introductory chapters describe earlier methods of justice in medieval Scotland and the events that led to the formation of the Court of Sessions in 1532. Godfrey (U. of Glasgow, Scotland) demonstrates how the new procedures of the Court of Session mark a profound shift from medieval to early modern thinking and methods in legal affairs in Scotland, noting the shift from taking care of disputes privately (feuding) to a public rule of law. The analysis of cases is painstaking and features frequent quotes from the original documents. The cases are organized according to type, including fee, heritage, and litigation. An extensive bibliography is provided. Annotation c2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
