This volume collects 56 papers from the November 2004 symposium on group-IV (Si:Ge:C) semiconductor nanostructures, a new class of functional materials and devices with characteristic dimensions less than 50 nm. The researchers discuss fabrication and characterization techniques, optical and transport properties, and applications in photonic systems, nanocrystal memories, light-emitting and terahertz devices, nanowire-based interconnections, and transistors. Topics include light emission in aperiodic Thue-Morse dielectrics, development of a SiGe quantum cascade laser, electric force microscopy of individually charged silicon nanoparticles, surface cusp formation in silicon homoepitaxy, and optical activation of nanowires using Er-doped sol-gel derived silica.
