Leclerc (Northwest Nazarene U.), in this revision of her dissertation, examines the theological underpinnings of the notion of women as sinners in the Christian tradition. She begins with a reading of the interpretation of women and sin in Jerome and Chrysostom and compares their views to that of Augustine. Using the feminist notion of female subjectivity, she then provides an analysis of women ascetics and their construction of women's place within Christian asceticism. She examines the writings of women ascetics of the late fourth century, British Methodists, and the 19th-century holiness movement and explores in depth the writings and practice of John Wesley.
