James (1208-76) himself wrote the account of his major military campaigns and some selected political events of his reign in what has become of the great works on medieval Catalan literature and an important historical record for the period. He says he wrote it to demonstrate to other kings what he had been able to achieve with God's help, and probably had his own heirs in mind, because the book had no wide distribution outside the family circle. The original manuscript has been lost, and Smith and Buffery primarily use the 1343 Poblet manuscript, widely accepted as the most closely related to the original still extant.
