Common Core Standards for High School Mathematics—A Quick-Start Guide

Schwols and Dempsey, former educators and consultants at the non-profit organization Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning, provide guidance to teachers on how to adapt existing lessons and activities or develop new lessons aligned with the Common Core State Standards for high school math for each of the five conceptual categories: number and quantity, algebra, functions, geometry, and statistics and probability. They present an overview of the general structure of the standards, then examine how the standards in each category build upon and extend the skills students acquired in earlier grades. They explore the links between the categories and domains and connect math content standards and practice standards. They include a chapter on lesson planning, which outlines a process for creating standards-based lessons that use the instructional strategies detailed in Classroom Instruction That Works, 2nd ed. by Dean et al.
