Tagore and China

The renowned Indian philosopher-poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a consistent and influential advocate for reinvigorating peaceful relations between India and China as the basis for broadening cooperation across Asia as a whole, even if, as one of the Chinese editors suggests, many of Tagore's ideas remain misunderstood in China. In the interests of furthering Chinese understandings of Tagore, this volume collects 21 papers from an international seminar, "Understanding Tagore: New Perspectives and New Research," held at Peking U. in China in August of 2010. Papers discuss the significance of Tagore's 1924 visit to China, Tagore's views of China as a world civilization, Chinese-Indian encounters involving Tagore, Tagore's understanding of Chinese-Indian relations in broader Asian perspective, Chinese receptions of Tagore's creative works, the relationship between Tagore's work and Chinese literature, Tagore's views on modernity and society (views which caused some Chinese thinkers to protest his 1924 visit), and Tagore's contemporary relevance.
