This volume accompanies an exhibition of the work of American master painter and printmaker Alfred Hutty (1877-1954), held at Charleston's Gibbes Museum of Art and the Greenville County Museum of Art in South Carolina, and the Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, GA. One of four principal artists of the "Charleston Renaissance" movement flourishing in the city between WWI and WWII, Hutty was a native of the Midwest, who came to Charleston following several years in the Art Students League colony at Woodstock, New York. As a transplant to Charleston, he arrived free of both the good and bad prejudices of the locals, and presented a fresh view of the landscapes and its inhabitants in his work. The text features four essays on the artist and his career, illustrated with 96 b&w and full-color reproductions and photographs; a catalog of 231 prints; and list of exhibitions held in Hutty's lifetime.
