Swanson, an expert on Chinese maritime history, recounts the 30-year naval career of Commander Irvin Gillis, as well as his 30 years of civilian life in China, where he traded antiquities and ancient texts. The account begins with his education and his sea duty in the Atlantic and Pacific, and continues through his work in naval intelligence in Asia, his career as a diplomat in China, his business activities selling warships in China in the early years of the 20th century, and his return to duty in WWI in Peking. His civilian life in China, 1919-1948, was punctuated by his role in assembling a collection of 100,000 rare books from Imperialist China, later known as the Gest Collection.
