International contributors in anthropology, education, journalism, and gender studies show that the experiences of youth differ widely according to gender, class, and ethnicity. They reveal that youth also functions as a contested category in transnational struggles with modernity. Part 1, on gender and generation, touches on topics such as mobile phones and the commercialization of relationships, and claiming youth and womanhood in Northern Namibia. Part 2, mass-mediated modernities, looks at issues such as gendered modernities among rural indigenous Fijian teens, and teenaged girls as viewers of global TV and Hindi films. Part 3 studies youth as a symbol of modernity's contentions, with chapters on topics such as perceptions of child sex tourism in Goa, India. Part 4 presents work on agency and reframing youth identifiers, looking at local youth activism in New Zealand and gang culture among Tongan American youth.
