Lawrence (English, U. British Columbia) invokes a radical philosophy of generosity in this reading of a number of plays by Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. He argues that the plays express an early modern ambivalence toward self-interested motivation in gift-giving, equivocating love and debt, but also that in these plays we can't reduce generosity to gift-giving or gift-giving to circulation. He argues "while both Shakespeare and Marlow explore exchange relations and the societies they constitute, characters who over-rely on the mechanisms of exchange prove tragic..." He draws on and reads together Marcel Mauss and Jacques Derrida's famous work on gift-economies, but also Emmanuel Levinas' very different ethical analysis of generosity and Paul Riceour's criticism of Mauss for equivocating gift-giving and commerce. In the process, Lawrence also critically examines how new historicists and cultural materialists reproduce assumptions about exchange in human relations in their literary analyses and theories. 作者簡介
Sean Lawrence is assistant professor of English at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan, and is a past fellow of the Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship at Dalhousie University. His work has appeared in the European Journal of English Studies, English Studies in Canada, Renascence, and other journals.
