Honess (Italian, U. of Leeds, UK) analyzes the importance of the concepts of citizenship and the city-state in the writings of Dante Alighieri and connects them to broader theological and poetical concerns of the Florentine poet. She discusses how Dante's ideals of citizenship are reflected in the realms of the afterlife portrayed in his poetry, as well as his treatment of the outsider (the "anti-citizen") within the moral structure of the Commedia. The poetic functions of the city of Jerusalem in his writings is also explored prior to a concluding discussion of the interface between Dante's conceptions of "the poetic" and "the civic."
