O'Connor, a public service librarian in Canada, aids readers' advisors and others who work with readers in finding books that relate to life stories, such as memoirs, autobiographies, and diaries. She gives a sampling of widely available, in print titles (rather than an in-depth scholarly look at these genres), which are organized by category: travel and adventure; celebrities; creative individuals; types of employment; places and times, from natural environments to faraway places; life away from home, with books by immigrants, expatriates, and others; life with others like family members and lovers; inner life; politics; history; war; and survivors. The main entries consist of 655 titles, with an additional 2,800 fiction read-alikes and other titles for each category. Chapters include an introduction and five classics in the category, with annotated entries and suggested titles to read after each book, or books to start with.
