This collection of essays on the history of Vietnam and the West explores the cultural and political relationships between the Southeast Asian nation and a variety of Western powers. The text avoids popular tropes of colonial action and Vietnamese reaction and instead focuses on the long term influences of foreign ideas and culture on Vietnamese culture and the ways in which local culture collected and adapted Western influence to circumstances on the ground. The work is divided chronologically into pre-colonial encounters up until 1862, French and American colonial periods, and modern Vietnam since 1975, and articles discuss such topics as Vietnamese Christian identity in the early nineteenth century, Vietnamese women and anti-French activism, and Western legacies and water privatization policies in modern Vietnam. Contributors include academics from Canadian and American universities. The book is published by the Southeast Asia Program, which is at Cornell University.
