In 1879, mounted British forces invaded the independent African kingdom of Zululand and wiped out at least 7,000 Zulu warriors who fought on foot with spears against the rifles of the British. This book presents memoirs of British officers who fought in the Zulu War. Most of the memoirs were published at the turn of the century and have been unavailable until now. Describing battles, skirmishes, and day-to-day life, some of the officers write with humor, focusing on the personalities of the officers, while others record the grim details of combat. For each memoir, the editor gives background on the officer's career and his role in the war. The book includes b&w historical illustrations from newspaper and magazine engravings of the period, plus some illustrations from Hamilton-Browne's A Lost Legionary in South Africa. The book was first published in hardback by Greenhill Books in 1992, under the title Under the Orders of the Great White Queen. Knight has written other books on the Anglo-Zulu War.
