The papers in this volume treat the cultural history of the Roman empire from the earliest days of the Principate until the sixth century. They offer interpretations of epigraphic and legal as well as of literary authorities, and of classic writings of modern times (Hobbes, Gibbon, Syme). Of the seventeen chapters, six of the most substantial, making up nearly half of the book, are previously unpublished. Those that have appeared previously are selected, with appropriate revision, from less readily accessible publications.
作者簡介
John Matthews is a leading interpreter of the cultural and social history of the later Roman empire. His works include Western Aristocracies and Imperial Court, AD 364-425 (Oxford University Press), The Roman Empire of Ammianus (Duckworth and Johns Hopkins, reprinted by Michigan Classical Press), Laying Down the Law: A study of the Theodosian Code (Yale University Press), and The Journey of Theophanes: Travel, business and daily life in the Roman East (Yale University Press). The last of these received the 2007 James Henry Breasted Prize awarded by the American Historical Association. He is also co-author, with Tim Cornell, of Atlas of the Roman World (Phaidon, with many translations). His current research is on the early history of the city of Constantinople. Having taught for many years at the University of Oxford, John Matthews is now John M. Schiff Professor of History and Classics at Yale University. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, of the Royal Historical Society and of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
