They begin with the physical characteristics of the city, mapping it and estimating the population as it grew and then waned with the departure of the Romans. The next section deals with the physical landscape: plants, gardens, roads and suburbs. The third part contains speculations on the daily life, work and religious expressions of Londoners as indicated from the artifacts. The final essays are on the artifacts themselves: pottery, glass, surgical tools, even bath tools and nail cleaners. This is followed by a retrospective of Sheldon and his work. The work is well illustrated with photographs, drawings and graphs.
