Kyffin Williams was the iconic painter of the Welsh landscape, his work hugely popular with collectors and the public. Yet what sort of man was this artist who defined Wales for many?
Journalist Ian Skidmore interviewed Kyffin and many of his friends, relatives and contemporaries to assemble a unique memoir of his former neighbour and friend. It shows a far from 'typical' Welshman. Kyffin belonged to the north Wales squirearchy: his family has a long and exotic pedigree. His abiding love of the mountains of north Wales was founded on an equally felt love of hunting and shooting. He was educated at an English public school and taught for many years at Highgate School in London.
Kyffin also suffered from epilepsy, which he felt defined his life and his painting. His work on behalf of fellow sufferers was typical of his generosity. And he was also forthright and of strong opinion, as the art establishment which was dismissive of him for so long discovered.

Ian Skidmore is a former Fleet Street journalist and popular broadcaster on BBC Radio Wales. He is the author of Hearts of Oak, Nerves of Steel: Shipwrecks and Heroism in the Celtic Sea, and Lifeboat VC: The Story of Coxwain Dick Evans Bem and His Many Rescues.
