Judas Iscariot, known for his betrayal of Jesus, is a key figure in the Gospel narratives. As an insider become outsider, Judas demarcates Christian boundaries of good and evil. The book draws on Jorge Luis Borges' "Three Versions of Judas" to present three Judases in the Gospels: a Judas necessary to the divine plan; a Judas who is a determined outsider, denying himself for God's glory; and a Judas who is demonic. Exploring the findings of biblical criticism and artistic responses to Judas, 'Three Versions of Judas' offers an analysis of the evil necessarily inherent in Christian narratives about Judas.

Richard G. Walsh is Professor of Religion and Co-director of the Honors Program at Methodist University (Fayetteville, NC). Previous books include Mapping Myths of Biblical Interpretation (Sheffield, 2001); Reading the Gospels in the Dark: Portrayals of Jesus in Film (TPI, 2003); and Finding St. Paul in Film (T & T, 2005). He is co-author with Jeffrey L. Staley of Jesus, the Gospels, and Cinematic Imagination: A Handbook to Jesus on DVD (Westminster John Knox, 2007) and co-editor with George Aichele of Screening Scripture: Intertextual Connections between Scripture and Film (TPI, 2002); and Those Outside: Noncanonical Readings of the Canonical Gospels (T & T, 2005).
