Feng (Chinese and Japanese, Grinnell College) chronicles the history of Ginling College, a women's college in China founded by Western Christian missionaries. Ginling's mixing of a Christian education with the Confucian ideal of family life gave the school a remarkably strong influence on China, given its relatively short life (less than 50 years) and small number of graduates (just over 1000). Relying largely on written and oral records from the Western and Chinese women who founded and ran the school, Feng shows how Ginling's self-identity as a family was a source of both strength and conflict (especially during its two periods of exile from its home in Nanjing).
