商品簡介

In this memoir, Yearn Hong Choi chronicles how he traversed geography and culture in the post-war era, becoming an academic and poet with an international perspective.

Arriving Seattle from Seoul in 1968, he lived through a politically significant time in both Korean and U.S. history. At Indiana University, the author worked in a pizza restaurant, earning barely one semester's tuition at a time, while applying his poet's view of human nature to studies of public administration.

The author experienced the anti-war movement as a foreign student. At the same time liberal ideas, which gained popularity during the '60s, worked their way into philosophies of governance; the notion of "environmental impact" and the finite capacity of the earth got serious consideration for the first time during this era.

His professional life took in everything from founding the Korean American Poets Society to working at the Pentagon for the Defense Department. His poetic reflections, with one foot in each culture, flavor the memoir. He is a realist, and at the same time, an artist. He can describe in broad strokes how government could serve people better; he can also reflect in verse on precious personal moments.

After more then 40 years of life in the U.S., his writings show a freshness in their enthusiasm to engage anew as both an immigrant and an insider. Choi's memoir is a unique journey from Korean to Korean-American from the perspective of one skilled cultural and political observer.---Martha Vickery, Managing Editor Korean Quarterly

Song of Myself: by Yearn Hong Choi is a fascinating story that takes you on an adventuresome ride through a life. One sees the best of Americans who put themselves out for a stranger who needs help and other Americans with scabs on their souls. Choi gives the reader insights into another culture whose enduring family ties represent values that we may have had before we became such a mobile society. We are introduced to some well-known celebrities who crossed Choi's path, such as Allen Ginsberg, Gwendolyn Brooks and others. Choi is a close observer of human nature with the sensitive soul of a poet and a practical down-to-earth appreciation of what makes things work. Choi served in the Environmental Office of the Defense Department.

In Song of Myself: Choi sees the opportunities available to the earnest and hard-working immigrant but he also faces the slights and underbelly of prejudice, all looked at with the forgiving nature of its victim. This memoir is universal in its outreach with moments that will touch everyone.---J. Glenn Evans, founder and director of PoetsWest, the author of two novels and four books of poetry including Deadly Mistress
